That’s right! The BSA has
put Scouting on the map all across the nation!
In time for Join Scouting 2010, the Boy Scouts of America now
has its own joining Web page, www.BeAScout.org, with
information on Scouting, plus an actual
Google map application that will help potential Scouts and their
parents find packs, troops, and crews in their communities and neighborhoods
right here in Western Mass. Council. It’s here now!
How will it work? In
a nutshell, unit leaders will be able to update their unit’s Google “pin” –
the bubble you see on Google maps – through MyScouting. They can add their
unit meeting time, location, phone number, unit Web site address if they
have one, as well as a contact name for the unit.
It’s easy!
The Google Pin. The
information in the “pins” will be tied to unit records in the BSA’s
database. Unit leaders will have the ability to update this information to
keep it accurate and up to date. They will be able to edit it as often as
they like.
A BeAScout
webinar
is posted on www.scouting.org in the
Volunteer tab; choose BeAScout Webinar Presentation in the Quick Links along
the right side menu for more information!
Two New Outdoor Awards Unveiled
Two new awards have been developed to promote "outdoorism"
for Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts.
The National Outdoor Challenge (No. 430-016) is a unit
award that recognizes troops/teams that maintain or increase the amount of
outdoor activity when compared to the previous year.
With the release of this award, the National Camping Award
has been discontinued; however, patches for camping nights will be available
until the inventory is depleted.
The National Outdoor Achievement Award (No. 430-509)
recognizes Boy Scouts/Varsity Scouts that excel in outdoor participation.
The award consists of five areas of emphasis (camping, aquatics, hiking,
riding and adventure) with rigorous requirements to earn each segment.
Scouts looking for an extra challenge can earn the National
Medal for Outdoor Achievement. This challenging award requires earning
at least three of the National Outdoor Achievement segments, planning and
leading a trek, earning Wilderness First Aid and becoming a Leave No Trace
Trainer as well as several other requirements.

Important Changes To Youth Protection Training Policy:
Please Read
The following information was received from the National BSA Council
on Friday, May 28, 2010:
Youth safety is the
No. 1 concern of the BSA.
To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create
even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy
Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further
enhance its Youth Protection policies:
Effective June 1, 2010:
Youth Protection Training is required for all
registered volunteers.
New leaders are required to take Youth Protection
Training before they submit their application for registration. The
certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the
time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
Youth Protection Training must be taken every two
years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection Training record is not current
at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.
Concept: To encourage
units to grow their membership over the previous year and
reward their success.
Reward for Packs:
Pinewood Derby kits for boys
registered as of January 1,
2011.
Reward for Troops and
Crews: Western Massachusetts
Council camp weekend cabin rental (depending on cabin
availability, does not include Training Lodge).
Evaluation:
Units will be evaluated by the district leadership on
December 31, 2010.
To Qualify:
Units will qualify by achieving the following requirements:
Contact your District Executive
for information, suggestions, and recruiting
materials, and to arrange for flyers and
promotion.
Host a Friends of Scouting family presentation by
June 30, 2010.
Host at least one spring recruitment event and
net +2 youth over last June by June 30, 2010. (See also
Requirement 4.)
During the fall, host the following recruiting
events (it’s as simple as a-b-c!). You must host each type event
at least once:
a. A school night rally.
b. A high visibility recruitment drive outside of your
typical meeting place.
c. A “give ‘em another chance” unit location recruitment
event like, open house or bring-a-buddy.
By December 31, 2010, show a net gain of +3 youth
in your unit over last year OR +4 youth if you did not qualify
on Requirement #2.
